'Earth Hour' has come along way since it first started in Australia back in 2007. 10 years on and countries all over the world now take part in the initiative, started to raise awareness on the effects of climate change.
Simply put, Earth hour is 60 minutes you dedicate to quite literally switching off. Turn off the lights, turn off all electronic devices and well, do whatever you want to do for an hour in the dark. Most importantly, feel part of something much bigger, know that your actions can make a difference to the planet.
Since starting, Earth Hour has partnered up with WWF, the world's leading independent conservation organisation. WWF's mission is to 'create a world where people and wildlife can thrive together.' They go on to explain that they are doing this by 'pushing for a reduction in carbon emissions that will avoid catastrophic climate change' and by 'pressing for measures to help people live sustainably, within the means of our one planet.'
Earth Hour is a fantastic initiative to raise awareness of WWF's work and to fundraise for the cause. Last year an incredible 2.7 million people got involved, 178 countries participated and over 12,700 landmarks switched off. We have a feeling that 2017 is going to be even bigger.
Over at Collingwood Ecoware we are always glad to support initiatives that in hand, support our earth. It's no secret that we love our planet and we work hard to bring consumers eco friendly items for their homes.
So what will we be doing for Earth Hour? First of all, we have to make sure to sign up online. You can do so too here:
Once we had signed up we received an email telling us about all the events around the world and how they will be celebrating Earth Hour.
We've decided to stay in for Earth Hour and we're actually quite looking forward to it! An hour with no electricity can't be that difficult right? We're thinking of setting up camp in the living room with some candles, some snacks and a pack of cards.
Will you be taking part in Earth Hour?
If so, we'd love to hear how you'll be spending your hour.
